Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 1 pound pickled herring fillets
- 1/2 cup white vinegar
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 red onion, thinly sliced
- 1 teaspoon whole peppercorns
- 4 slices of rye bread
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- Fresh dill for garnish
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, combine 1/2 cup of white vinegar and 1/4 cup of sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and let it cool.
- In a glass or plastic container, layer the pickled herring fillets, sliced red onion, and whole peppercorns. Pour the cooled vinegar mixture over the herring. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to allow the flavors to meld.
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. In a small bowl, mix together 2 cloves of minced garlic and 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Brush the garlic butter onto the rye bread slices and place them on a baking sheet. Bake for 5-7 minutes until the bread is crispy and golden brown.
- To serve, arrange the pickled herring on a platter, garnish with fresh dill, and serve with the crispy garlic toast on the side.
Pickled herring is a traditional dish with a rich history, originating in Northern Europe. This flavorful delicacy has been enjoyed for centuries, especially in countries like Sweden, Norway, and Germany. The herring is cured in a brine of vinegar, salt, sugar, and spices, resulting in a tangy and savory flavor profile. The dish is often served with a side of garlic toast, adding a delicious crunch and garlicky aroma to complement the pickled herring. In modern times, renowned chefs and restaurants have put their own spin on this classic dish, incorporating fresh herbs, citrus zest, and other innovative ingredients to elevate the flavors. The best version of this dish can be found in authentic Scandinavian eateries or seafood-focused restaurants that prioritize high-quality herring and expertly prepared garlic toast. When making pickled herring with garlic toast at home, it's crucial to source the freshest herring available and pay attention to the brining process to achieve the perfect balance of sweet, sour, and savory notes. Additionally, the garlic toast should be made with artisanal bread, generously rubbed with fresh garlic and high-quality olive oil before toasting to golden perfection. For those seeking a unique twist, consider alternative methods such as adding a touch of honey or dill to the pickling brine, or experimenting with different types of bread for the garlic toast, such as rye or sourdough. Whether enjoyed as an appetizer, part of a smorgasbord, or a light lunch, pickled herring with a side of garlic toast is a timeless culinary experience that continues to captivate food enthusiasts around the world.
