The liverwurst sandwich has a rich history dating back to the 18th century in Germany. This traditional German dish consists of liverwurst, a spreadable sausage made from liver, onions, and various spices, served on rye bread with mustard or pickles. The sandwich gained popularity in the United States during the 20th century, becoming a staple in delis and diners. Chefs and home cooks have put their own spin on the classic, adding ingredients like lettuce, tomato, and cheese. Today, the best liverwurst sandwiches can be found in German delis and specialty sandwich shops, where the key is to use high-quality liverwurst and fresh, flavorful rye bread.
