Fried calamari, a beloved Italian dish, has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. It originated in the coastal regions of Italy, where fresh squid was abundant. The dish gained popularity in the United States in the 20th century, particularly in Italian-American communities. Renowned chefs like Lidia Bastianich and Mario Batali have popularized this crispy, flavorful appetizer in their restaurants. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in coastal regions like Sicily, where the squid is incredibly fresh. The key to perfect fried calamari lies in the light, crispy batter and the tender, not overcooked squid. Some chefs also add a touch of heat with a sprinkle of chili flakes or serve it with a zesty marinara sauce for a delightful twist.
