Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 cup of unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup of heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/3 cup of granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
  • Add the cold, cubed unsalted butter to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • In a separate bowl, mix 1/2 cup of heavy cream and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
  • Gently fold in 1/2 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips.
  • Transfer the dough to a floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it comes together. Pat the dough into a 8-inch circle and cut it into 8 wedges.
  • Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Allow the scones to cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.

Chocolate chip scones have a rich history dating back to 16th century Scotland, where they were first made. These delectable treats gained popularity in the United States during the 20th century, becoming a staple in many bakeries and cafes. Renowned chefs like Ina Garten and Martha Stewart have popularized their own versions of this classic recipe, adding their unique twists to the traditional scone. Today, the best chocolate chip scones can be found in quaint bakeries and coffee shops across the United States, with notable mentions including the famous Magnolia Bakery in New York City and the charming Tartine Bakery in San Francisco. The key to perfecting this indulgent treat lies in achieving the ideal balance of buttery, flaky texture and the right amount of chocolate chips for that irresistible sweetness. Whether enjoyed with a cup of tea or coffee, chocolate chip scones are a delightful indulgence for any time of day.
