Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 2 cups mashed potatoes
- 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh dill
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of flour and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Gradually add 1/2 cup of warm water, kneading the dough until smooth. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, mix together 2 cups of mashed potatoes, 1/2 cup of finely chopped onion, and salt and pepper to taste.
- On a floured surface, roll out the dough to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut out circles using a cookie cutter or a glass.
- Place a spoonful of the potato filling in the center of each circle. Fold the dough over the filling and pinch the edges to seal.
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the vareniki in batches for 3-4 minutes, or until they float to the surface. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain.
- In a small saucepan, melt 1/4 cup of butter over low heat. Pour the melted butter over the cooked vareniki.
- Serve the vareniki with a dollop of sour cream on top and a sprinkle of chopped fresh dill. Enjoy!
Vareniki, a traditional Ukrainian dumpling dish, has a rich history dating back to the 13th century. These delectable pockets of dough are typically filled with a variety of ingredients such as potatoes, cheese, or fruit. The dish gained popularity in the 19th century and has since become a staple in Ukrainian cuisine. Vareniki is often served with a generous dollop of sour cream, adding a creamy and tangy flavor to the dumplings. Chefs in Ukraine and Russian restaurants have perfected the art of making vareniki, ensuring the dough is tender and the fillings are flavorful. Today, the best vareniki with sour cream topping can be found in authentic Ukrainian eateries, where the dish is made with love and tradition. The key to a perfect vareniki lies in the dough, which should be thin and delicate, and the sour cream topping, which adds a delightful richness to the dish. For those looking to try a different twist on vareniki, some chefs also serve it with melted butter and caramelized onions, offering a savory alternative to the classic sour cream topping.
