Turkish Doner Kebab
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 1 lb of lamb or beef, thinly sliced
- 1 onion, grated
- 3 cloves of garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- 1 teaspoon of paprika
- 1 teaspoon of cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 4 pita bread
- 1 tomato, thinly sliced
- 1 cucumber, thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup of shredded lettuce
- 1/4 cup of chopped parsley
- 1/4 cup of chopped mint
- 1/4 cup of chopped dill
- 1/4 cup of tahini sauce
- 1/4 cup of hot sauce
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the thinly sliced meat, grated onion, minced garlic, plain yogurt, olive oil, paprika, cumin, black pepper, and salt. Mix well to ensure the meat is evenly coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight for best results.
- Preheat the grill to medium-high heat. Thread the marinated meat onto a skewer and grill for 10-15 minutes, turning occasionally, until the meat is cooked through and slightly charred. Alternatively, you can use a vertical rotisserie to cook the meat.
- While the meat is cooking, warm the pita bread on the grill for 1-2 minutes on each side, until slightly toasted.
- Once the meat is cooked, remove it from the skewer and thinly slice it.
- To assemble the doner kebabs, place a warmed pita bread on a plate. Top with a generous amount of sliced meat, tomato, cucumber, lettuce, parsley, mint, and dill. Drizzle with tahini sauce and hot sauce.
- Fold the pita bread over the filling to form a wrap. Serve the doner kebabs immediately, with extra tahini sauce and hot sauce on the side.
The Turkish Doner Kebab has a rich history dating back to the Ottoman Empire. It is a popular street food that has become a global sensation. The dish consists of seasoned meat, typically lamb, beef, or chicken, stacked on a vertical rotisserie and slow-cooked to perfection. The meat is then thinly sliced and served in a pita or on a plate with accompaniments like rice, vegetables, and yogurt sauce. Istanbul is renowned for its doner kebab, with chefs in the city perfecting the art of seasoning and cooking the meat. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in authentic Turkish restaurants around the world. The key to a delicious doner kebab lies in the marination of the meat and the slow, consistent rotation on the vertical spit, ensuring a tender and flavorful result. While the traditional method involves cooking the meat on a vertical rotisserie, some modern variations use horizontal rotisseries or even grilling techniques to achieve a similar taste. Whether enjoyed as a quick bite on the go or as a sit-down meal, the Turkish Doner Kebab continues to delight food enthusiasts with its savory flavors and cultural significance.
