  • 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup of soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of sesame oil
  • 1/2 cup of vegetable broth
  • 1 tablespoon of cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons of water
  • Sesame seeds and green onions for garnish

Instructions

  • Place the tofu cubes in a bowl and sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of cornstarch. Gently toss to coat the tofu evenly.

  • Add the soy sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, sesame oil, and vegetable broth to the skillet. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer.
  • In a small bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water to create a slurry. Add the slurry to the skillet and stir until the sauce thickens, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Return the crispy tofu to the skillet and toss to coat with the garlic sauce. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to heat the tofu through.
  • Garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions before serving.

Tofu with Garlic Sauce is a popular dish in Chinese cuisine, known for its savory and aromatic flavors. This dish has a rich history, with origins in Sichuan province, where it was traditionally prepared as a spicy and pungent delicacy. The dish gained popularity in the West due to its vegetarian-friendly nature and the growing interest in plant-based diets. Renowned chefs like Martin Yan and Ming Tsai have popularized this dish in their restaurants, showcasing their unique interpretations of the classic recipe. Today, the best versions of Tofu with Garlic Sauce can be found in authentic Chinese restaurants that prioritize using fresh, high-quality tofu and a well-balanced garlic sauce. The key to a perfect Tofu with Garlic Sauce lies in achieving the right balance of flavors, with the garlic-infused sauce complementing the delicate texture of the tofu. It's important to get the tofu's texture just right, ensuring it's firm yet tender, to create a satisfying dish that's both flavorful and comforting. While the traditional recipe calls for a spicy kick, there are also milder variations available for those who prefer a less intense heat. Whether you're a fan of traditional Sichuan cuisine or looking to explore vegetarian options, Tofu with Garlic Sauce is a must-try dish that offers a delightful blend of flavors and textures.
