Ingredients
- 4 salmon fillets (6 oz each)
- 1/2 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon grated ginger
- 2 tablespoons mirin
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 green onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
Instructions
- In a small bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup soy sauce, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 2 cloves minced garlic, 1 tablespoon grated ginger, 2 tablespoons mirin, 1 tablespoon sesame oil, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper to make the teriyaki marinade.
- Place the salmon fillets in a shallow dish and pour the teriyaki marinade over them. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, turning the fillets once to ensure they are evenly coated.
- Preheat the grill to medium-high heat and lightly oil the grate.
- Remove the salmon fillets from the marinade and shake off any excess. Discard the remaining marinade.
- Grill the salmon for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until the fish flakes easily with a fork and has nice grill marks.
- Transfer the grilled salmon to a serving platter and sprinkle with sliced green onions and sesame seeds.
- Serve the teriyaki grilled salmon hot with steamed rice and your favorite vegetables. Enjoy!
Teriyaki Grilled Salmon has a rich history rooted in Japanese culinary tradition. The dish originated in the Kanto region of Japan, where it was first prepared by skilled chefs using a combination of soy sauce, mirin, and sugar to create the signature teriyaki glaze. Over time, this delectable dish gained popularity and spread to other parts of the world, particularly in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, where it became a staple in many seafood restaurants. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in renowned Japanese restaurants and seafood eateries, where chefs expertly grill fresh salmon to perfection and glaze it with a savory-sweet teriyaki sauce. To achieve the best results, it's crucial to use high-quality salmon and master the art of grilling to achieve that perfect charred exterior and tender, flaky interior. For a unique twist, some chefs also incorporate ingredients like ginger, garlic, or sesame oil into the teriyaki marinade, adding depth and complexity to the flavor profile. Whether enjoyed in a traditional Japanese setting or a modern fusion restaurant, Teriyaki Grilled Salmon continues to delight diners with its irresistible combination of umami and sweetness.
