Spinach and Feta Empanadas
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 10 ounces fresh spinach, chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 cup crumbled feta cheese
- 2 sheets of store-bought pie crust
- 1 egg, beaten
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add 1 small finely chopped onion and 2 cloves of minced garlic, and cook until softened, about 3 minutes.
- Add 10 ounces of chopped fresh spinach to the skillet and cook until wilted, about 5 minutes. Season with 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper, and 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg. Remove from heat and let cool.
- Once the spinach mixture has cooled, stir in 1 cup of crumbled feta cheese.
- Roll out the 2 sheets of store-bought pie crust on a lightly floured surface. Using a round cutter or a small bowl, cut out circles of dough, about 4 inches in diameter.
- Place a spoonful of the spinach and feta mixture in the center of each dough circle. Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape, then crimp the edges with a fork to seal.
- Place the empanadas on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with the beaten egg.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Allow the empanadas to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!
Spinach and feta empanadas have a rich history that dates back to the Mediterranean region, where the combination of spinach and feta cheese has been a culinary staple for centuries. This savory pastry dish has its roots in Greek and Middle Eastern cuisines, where it was traditionally prepared as a handheld snack or appetizer. The flaky, golden-brown crust of the empanada perfectly complements the creamy, tangy filling of spinach and feta, creating a delightful flavor and texture contrast. In recent years, this delectable dish has gained popularity in the United States, particularly in Mediterranean and Latin American restaurants. Chefs and home cooks alike have put their own unique spin on the classic recipe, incorporating various herbs, spices, and other ingredients to enhance the flavors. The best versions of spinach and feta empanadas can be found in authentic Greek or Middle Eastern eateries, where the chefs take pride in using traditional methods and high-quality ingredients to create an unforgettable culinary experience. When making spinach and feta empanadas, it's crucial to get the filling just right. Fresh spinach and creamy feta cheese are essential components that should be of the highest quality to ensure a delicious outcome. Additionally, the pastry dough plays a crucial role in the overall taste and texture of the empanadas, so it's important to use a flaky, buttery dough that bakes to perfection. For those looking to put a unique twist on the traditional recipe, alternative methods such as adding pine nuts or raisins to the filling can provide an interesting flavor contrast. Whether enjoyed as a snack, appetizer, or main course, spinach and feta empanadas continue to captivate food enthusiasts with their irresistible blend of flavors and cultural heritage.
