Ingredients

  • 8 oz spaghetti
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese, parsley, egg, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Mix until well combined, then shape into meatballs about 1 inch in diameter.
  • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute.
  • Stir in the crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, dried basil, and red pepper flakes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes.
  • While the sauce is simmering, cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  • Once the sauce has simmered, return the meatballs to the skillet and let them simmer in the sauce for an additional 10 minutes.
  • To serve, place a portion of spaghetti on each plate, top with meatballs and sauce, and garnish with fresh basil leaves. Enjoy!

Italian

Spaghetti with meatballs is a classic Italian-American dish that has become a staple in many households and restaurants around the world. The origins of this dish can be traced back to Italian immigrants who brought their love for pasta and meatballs to the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The dish gained popularity in the US, particularly in New York City, where Italian-American chefs put their own spin on traditional Italian recipes. Today, it's a beloved comfort food that can be found on menus in Italian restaurants and diners across the country. The key to a delicious spaghetti with meatballs lies in the quality of the ingredients. The meatballs should be made with a blend of ground beef, pork, and veal, seasoned with herbs and spices, and cooked to perfection. The tomato sauce should be rich and flavorful, and the spaghetti should be al dente. While the dish is traditionally made with spaghetti, meatballs can also be served with other types of pasta such as penne or rigatoni. Some chefs also like to experiment with alternative methods for making the meatballs, such as adding cheese or breadcrumbs for extra flavor and texture. For the best version of this dish, head to Little Italy in New York City, where you can find authentic Italian restaurants serving up mouthwatering spaghetti with meatballs. Whether you're in the mood for a hearty home-cooked meal or a taste of Italian-American nostalgia, spaghetti with meatballs is a dish that never fails to satisfy.
