Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of pre-cooked shredded beef
  • 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 cups of pre-cooked cornmeal
  • 2 1/2 cups of warm water
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, mix 2 cups of pre-cooked shredded beef with 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese. Set aside.
  • In a separate bowl, combine 2 cups of pre-cooked cornmeal with 2 1/2 cups of warm water and 1 teaspoon of salt. Knead the mixture until a smooth dough forms.
  • Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape each portion into a ball. Flatten each ball to form a patty about 1/2 inch thick.
  • Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Cook the arepas for 5-6 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. Repeat with the remaining arepas, adding more oil as needed.
  • In the same skillet, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil over medium heat. Crack the eggs into the skillet and cook until the whites are set but the yolks are still runny, about 3 minutes.
  • To assemble, slice each arepa in half and fill with the shredded beef and cheese mixture. Top each arepa with a fried egg and serve immediately.

The history of Shredded Beef and Cheese Arepas with a fried egg on top can be traced back to the traditional Venezuelan cuisine. Arepas, a staple in Venezuelan and Colombian diets, are cornmeal patties filled with various ingredients. The addition of shredded beef and cheese, topped with a fried egg, adds a rich and savory twist to this beloved dish. The combination of tender shredded beef, gooey melted cheese, and a perfectly fried egg creates a mouthwatering experience. This dish has gained popularity in the United States, particularly in cities with a strong Latin American culinary influence, such as Miami and New York City. Chefs and restaurants have put their own spin on this classic, elevating it to new heights. The best version of this dish can be found in authentic Venezuelan or Colombian restaurants, where the arepas are made from scratch and filled with high-quality ingredients. The key to getting this dish right lies in the preparation of the arepas, ensuring they are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and the quality of the shredded beef, which should be tender and well-seasoned. While the traditional method involves filling the arepas with shredded beef and cheese, some variations include adding avocado, plantains, or aji sauce for an extra burst of flavor. Whether enjoyed for breakfast, brunch, or any time of the day, Shredded Beef and Cheese Arepas with a fried egg on top are a delicious and satisfying dish that showcases the rich culinary heritage of Venezuela and Colombia.
