Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 2 ahi tuna steaks (6 ounces each)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • In a shallow dish, combine 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of sesame oil, 1 teaspoon of grated fresh ginger, and 1 teaspoon of minced garlic.
  • Place the ahi tuna steaks in the marinade, turning to coat. Let marinate for 10 minutes, turning once.
  • While the tuna is marinating, heat a dry skillet over medium-high heat. Add 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds to the skillet and toast for 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently, until golden brown. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  • After the tuna has marinated, remove from the marinade and season with salt and pepper.
  • Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in the same skillet over high heat. Once the skillet is hot, add the tuna steaks and sear for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until the outside is browned and the inside is still pink.
  • Remove the tuna from the skillet and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing.
  • To serve, sprinkle the toasted sesame seeds over the seared ahi tuna steaks. Enjoy!

Seared Ahi Tuna, a popular dish in Hawaiian and Japanese cuisine, has a rich history dating back to ancient fishing traditions. The technique of searing the tuna quickly over high heat originated in Japan, where it was known as tataki. In the 1970s, renowned chefs like Roy Yamaguchi and Alan Wong introduced seared ahi tuna to the American culinary scene, incorporating local Hawaiian flavors and ingredients. Today, this dish can be found in upscale restaurants and sushi bars worldwide. The key to a perfect seared ahi tuna lies in using high-quality, sushi-grade tuna and mastering the art of searing it to perfection while keeping the center rare. For a twist, some chefs also use different spice rubs or marinades to enhance the flavor profile. If you're looking for the best seared ahi tuna, head to Hawaii, where the freshest catch is often used to create this delectable dish.
