Margherita pizza has a rich history dating back to 1889 when it was created in Naples, Italy. Legend has it that renowned pizzaiolo Raffaele Esposito crafted this iconic dish to honor Queen Margherita of Savoy, using tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil to represent the colors of the Italian flag. This simple yet flavorful combination quickly gained popularity and became a staple of Neapolitan cuisine. Today, the best versions of this dish can still be found in Naples, where the use of San Marzano tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and basil from the Campania region is crucial for an authentic taste. Alternatively, some chefs swear by wood-fired ovens for the perfect crust.
