Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 12 oz of spaghetti
- 2 cups of cherry tomatoes, halved
- 4 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup of extra virgin olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon of red pepper flakes
- Salt to taste
- 1/2 cup of fresh basil leaves, chopped
- 8 oz of fresh mozzarella, diced
- 1/4 cup of grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
- Cook the spaghetti according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and red pepper flakes. Cook for 1-2 minutes until the garlic is fragrant, but not browned.
- Add the halved cherry tomatoes to the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes, until they start to soften and release their juices.
- Add the cooked spaghetti to the skillet and toss to combine with the tomatoes and garlic. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
- Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the fresh basil leaves and diced mozzarella. The residual heat will melt the mozzarella slightly.
- Divide the pasta among serving plates and sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese. Garnish with additional fresh basil leaves if desired.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!
The history of Margherita Pasta dates back to the 19th century in Naples, Italy. Named after Queen Margherita of Savoy, this dish was created to honor her and the colors of the Italian flag. The combination of ripe tomatoes, mozzarella, and fresh basil represents the red, white, and green of the flag. The addition of extra fresh basil enhances the dish with its aromatic and peppery flavor, elevating the overall taste profile. Today, the best version of this dish can be found in authentic Italian trattorias in Naples, where skilled chefs use the finest San Marzano tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, and locally grown basil to create a truly authentic Margherita Pasta. The key to getting this dish right lies in using the freshest and highest quality ingredients. The ripe, juicy tomatoes and fragrant basil are essential for achieving the vibrant flavors that define this classic pasta dish. While the traditional Margherita Pasta is typically made with spaghetti or penne, some chefs and home cooks also prepare it with fresh, hand-rolled pasta such as tagliatelle or pappardelle, adding a luxurious twist to the dish. In conclusion, Margherita Pasta with extra fresh basil is a timeless Italian classic that celebrates the essence of Italian cuisine. When prepared with care and attention to detail, it captures the true flavors of Naples and the spirit of Italian culinary tradition.
