Beef and Guinness Pie
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 2 lbs stewing beef, diced
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 2 onions, chopped
- 2 carrots, diced
- 2 celery stalks, diced
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 can (14.9 oz) Guinness beer
- 1 cup beef broth
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 2 sprigs of thyme
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 sheet of puff pastry
- 1 egg, beaten
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a bowl, toss the diced beef with 2 tablespoons of flour, salt, and pepper until the beef is coated.
- In a large oven-safe pot, heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the beef and cook until browned on all sides. Remove the beef from the pot and set aside.
- In the same pot, add the chopped onions, carrots, celery, and minced garlic. Cook for 5 minutes until the vegetables are softened.
- Pour in the Guinness beer and beef broth, then stir in the tomato paste. Add the thyme and bay leaves. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Return the browned beef to the pot. Cover and transfer to the preheated oven. Cook for 1.5 hours, or until the beef is tender.
- Remove the pot from the oven and discard the thyme sprigs and bay leaves. Allow the filling to cool slightly.
- Increase the oven temperature to 400°F (200°C).
- Roll out the puff pastry on a floured surface to fit the top of the pot. Place the pastry over the filling and brush with beaten egg.
- Make a few slits in the pastry to allow steam to escape. Place the pot back in the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed.
- Allow the pie to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!
Beef and Guinness Pie is a classic Irish dish that dates back to the 18th century. It originated as a hearty and comforting meal for laborers and farmers. The rich and savory pie is made with tender chunks of beef, onions, carrots, and a generous amount of Guinness stout, which infuses the filling with a deep, robust flavor. The dish gained popularity in Irish pubs and has since become a staple in traditional Irish cuisine. Chefs like Darina Allen and Rachel Allen have popularized their own versions of the recipe, adding their unique twists to the traditional dish. Today, the best versions of Beef and Guinness Pie can be found in cozy Irish pubs and restaurants across Ireland, where it is often served with creamy mashed potatoes or buttery puff pastry. To make the perfect Beef and Guinness Pie, it's essential to use high-quality beef, slow-cook the filling to tender perfection, and allow the flavors to meld together for a truly indulgent experience. For a unique twist, some chefs also incorporate ingredients like mushrooms or bacon to add extra depth to the dish.
