Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 1 block of firm tofu, drained and pressed
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons sesame oil
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon grated ginger
- 2 green onions, chopped
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon gochujang (Korean red chili paste)
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix together 1/4 cup soy sauce, 2 tablespoons sesame oil, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, 3 cloves minced garlic, 1 teaspoon grated ginger, 2 chopped green onions, 1 tablespoon sesame seeds, 1 tablespoon rice vinegar, and 1 tablespoon gochujang to make the marinade.
- Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes and place them in a shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the tofu, making sure each piece is well coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or overnight for best results.
- Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the marinated tofu cubes and cook for 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally, until the tofu is browned and caramelized on all sides.
- Serve the Korean BBQ tofu with steamed rice and your choice of side dishes. Enjoy!
The history of Korean BBQ with marinated tofu dates back to ancient Korea, where tofu was a staple in the diet of Buddhist monks. Over time, the dish evolved to include marinated tofu, which is grilled to perfection. This vegetarian twist on the traditional Korean BBQ has gained popularity worldwide, offering a healthier and equally delicious alternative. Renowned chefs in Seoul, such as Chef Park at Gogung, have perfected the art of marinating tofu with a blend of soy sauce, sesame oil, and Korean spices. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in bustling cities like Seoul and Los Angeles, where Korean cuisine thrives. The key to getting this dish right lies in the marinade, which infuses the tofu with rich, savory flavors. For a unique twist, some chefs also incorporate gochujang, a spicy Korean chili paste, to add a kick to the marinade. Whether enjoyed at a traditional Korean restaurant or homemade, marinated tofu Korean BBQ is a delightful culinary experience that showcases the diversity of Korean cuisine.
