Italian Sausage and Polenta Skillet with Mushrooms
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 1 lb Italian sausage, casings removed
- 1 cup polenta
- 4 cups chicken broth
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions
- In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the Italian sausage and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. Remove the sausage from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Add the diced onion and sliced mushrooms, and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and dried oregano, and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.
- Pour the chicken broth into the skillet and bring to a boil. Gradually whisk in the polenta, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the polenta is thick and creamy, about 15-20 minutes.
- Stir the cooked Italian sausage back into the skillet with the polenta. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese over the top and let it melt into the mixture.
- Garnish with fresh parsley and serve the Italian Sausage and Polenta Skillet with Mushrooms hot, straight from the skillet.
The Italian Sausage and Polenta Skillet is a classic dish that has its roots in the rustic and hearty cuisine of Northern Italy. This comforting one-pan meal has been a staple in Italian households for generations, known for its rich flavors and simple preparation. The addition of mushrooms brings an earthy and savory element to the dish, elevating its taste and texture. In Italy, this dish is often associated with the Lombardy region, where polenta is a beloved staple. Chefs in this region take pride in using high-quality Italian sausage, locally sourced mushrooms, and finely ground cornmeal to create the perfect creamy polenta. The dish has also gained popularity in Italian-American communities, where it is often served at family gatherings and celebrations. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in authentic Italian trattorias and osterias, where chefs pay homage to tradition by using traditional methods and fresh, seasonal ingredients. When making this dish at home, it's important to use a good quality Italian sausage, preferably with fennel seeds for an authentic flavor. Additionally, taking the time to cook the polenta until it's creamy and smooth is crucial for achieving the perfect texture. For a twist on the classic recipe, some chefs also grill or roast the sausages before adding them to the skillet, adding a smoky depth of flavor. Whether enjoyed in a cozy Italian restaurant or prepared at home, the Italian Sausage and Polenta Skillet with added mushrooms is a delicious and satisfying dish that celebrates the rustic flavors of Italy.
