Ham and Cheese Empanadas with Jalapenos
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1/2 cup of unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
- 1/2 cup of cold water
- 1 cup of diced ham
- 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 jalapenos, seeded and finely chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of flour and 1 teaspoon of salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add the cold water, mixing until the dough comes together. Shape the dough into a ball, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the diced ham, shredded cheddar cheese, chopped jalapenos, and black pepper.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to about 1/8 inch thickness. Using a round cutter or a small plate, cut out circles of dough (approximately 5 inches in diameter).
- Place a spoonful of the ham and cheese filling in the center of each dough circle. Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape, then crimp the edges with a fork to seal.
- Place the empanadas on the prepared baking sheet, brush the tops with the beaten egg wash, and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Allow the empanadas to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy these delicious and spicy ham and cheese empanadas with jalapenos!

Over time, the dish made its way to Latin America, where it evolved to include local ingredients and flavors. The addition of jalapenos, a staple in Mexican cuisine, adds a spicy kick to the traditional recipe, creating a fusion of flavors that is both satisfying and exciting. In modern times, chefs and home cooks alike have embraced the versatility of empanadas, experimenting with different fillings and spices. The combination of smoky ham, creamy cheese, and fiery jalapenos creates a tantalizing flavor profile that has become a favorite among food enthusiasts. In terms of the best version of this dish, Argentina is renowned for its empanadas, and many consider the Argentinean version to be the gold standard. The key to a perfect empanada lies in the balance of flavors and the texture of the dough. Achieving the right level of spiciness with the jalapenos is crucial, as it should complement the richness of the ham and cheese without overpowering the dish.
