The French 75 is a classic cocktail with a storied history. It was first created during World War I at the New York Bar in Paris, later known as Harry's New York Bar. The cocktail was named after the French 75mm field gun, as it was said to have a kick as strong as the weapon. The drink typically consists of gin, champagne, lemon juice, and sugar, creating a refreshing and bubbly concoction. Today, the French 75 can be found in bars and restaurants around the world, but some of the best versions can be enjoyed in Paris, where the cocktail originated. The key to a perfect French 75 lies in the balance of flavors and the quality of the champagne used. For a twist, some mixologists also use cognac or vodka instead of gin, offering a unique take on this timeless cocktail.
