Ingredients

  • 3 cups of flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/4 cup of olive oil

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Grease a baking sheet.
  • In a large bowl, combine 3 cups of flour and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
  • Gradually add 1 cup of water and 1/4 cup of olive oil to the flour mixture, stirring until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5 minutes, then divide it into 20 equal portions and roll each portion into a ball.
  • On a floured surface, use a rolling pin to roll each ball into a thin, round disc about 6 inches in diameter.
  • Place the discs on the prepared baking sheet and prick each one several times with a fork to prevent air bubbles from forming.
  • Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the bread is lightly golden and crisp.
  • Allow the Eucharist bread to cool completely before serving during the religious ceremony.

Eucharist bread, also known as sacramental bread or altar bread, has a rich history dating back to the early Christian church. It is a central element of the Eucharist, symbolizing the body of Christ. Traditionally, it is made from wheat flour and water, and is unleavened to represent purity and the haste with which the Israelites fled Egypt. The process of making Eucharist bread is steeped in tradition and often involves skilled bakers and religious artisans. Today, the best versions of this sacred bread can be found in monasteries and convents, where time-honored recipes and meticulous preparation ensure its significance in religious ceremonies.
