Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 1 block of firm tofu, drained and pressed
- 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon of rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon of sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
- 1/4 cup of sesame seeds
- 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon of ground ginger
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Sliced green onions and sesame seeds for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes and place them in a large bowl.
- In a small bowl, whisk together 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of rice vinegar, and 1 tablespoon of sesame oil. Pour the mixture over the tofu and gently toss to coat. Let it marinate for 10 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of cornstarch, 1/4 cup of sesame seeds, 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon of ground ginger, salt, and pepper.
- Add the tofu to the sesame seed mixture and gently toss until the tofu is evenly coated.
- Arrange the tofu cubes in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Sprinkle any remaining sesame seed mixture on top of the tofu.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the tofu is golden and crispy, flipping the tofu halfway through the baking time for even browning.
- Once done, remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with sliced green onions and additional sesame seeds before serving.
- Enjoy your crispy baked sesame tofu as an appetizer or as a main course with your favorite dipping sauce or over a bed of rice.
Crispy Baked Tofu coated in sesame seeds has a rich history rooted in Asian cuisine. This dish originated in East Asia, where tofu has been a dietary staple for centuries. The sesame seeds add a nutty flavor and crunchy texture to the tofu, elevating its taste and appeal. Renowned chefs in Japan and China have perfected this recipe, incorporating their unique techniques and flavor profiles. Today, this dish can be found in popular Asian restaurants worldwide, with some of the best versions being served in traditional Japanese izakayas or Chinese dim sum eateries. The key to achieving the perfect crispy texture lies in pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture before coating it in a mixture of sesame seeds and seasonings. This ensures a delightful contrast of textures and flavors in every bite. Whether enjoyed as a standalone dish or added to stir-fries and salads, crispy baked tofu with sesame seeds is a delightful and nutritious option for vegetarians and tofu enthusiasts alike.
