Traeger Smoked Chicken with Honey Glaze
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 1 whole chicken, about 4-5 lbs
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- 2 tablespoons of Traeger chicken rub
- 1 cup of honey
- 1/4 cup of soy sauce
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon of ground ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
- 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons of water
Instructions
- Preheat your Traeger grill to 225°F according to manufacturer's instructions.
- Rinse the chicken and pat dry with paper towels. Rub the olive oil all over the chicken, then season with Traeger chicken rub, making sure to coat the entire chicken, including the cavity.
- Place the chicken directly on the grill grates and smoke for 2-3 hours, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F in the thickest part of the thigh. Use a meat thermometer to check for doneness.
- While the chicken is smoking, prepare the honey glaze. In a small saucepan, combine the honey, soy sauce, minced garlic, ground ginger, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture comes to a simmer.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and water to create a slurry. Slowly pour the slurry into the honey mixture, stirring constantly. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until the glaze has thickened slightly. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Once the chicken has reached the desired internal temperature, brush the honey glaze all over the chicken, using a basting brush to ensure an even coating. Close the lid and continue to smoke for an additional 10-15 minutes, allowing the glaze to caramelize and the chicken to reach a final internal temperature of 175°F.
- Carefully remove the chicken from the grill and let it rest for 10 minutes before carving. Serve the Traeger smoked chicken with honey glaze and enjoy!
The history of Traeger Smoked Chicken with a honey glaze dates back to the early days of American barbecue. This dish has its roots in the southern United States, where pitmasters and chefs perfected the art of smoking and grilling meats. The combination of smoky, tender chicken with a sweet and sticky honey glaze has become a beloved staple in barbecue culture. One of the key elements of this dish is the use of a Traeger grill, which imparts a distinct wood-fired flavor to the chicken. The honey glaze adds a caramelized sweetness that perfectly complements the smokiness of the meat. Today, some of the best versions of Traeger Smoked Chicken with a honey glaze can be found in renowned barbecue restaurants across the southern states, where chefs have honed their skills over generations. The key to achieving the perfect balance of flavors lies in the quality of the chicken, the choice of wood for smoking, and the precise application of the honey glaze. For those looking to recreate this dish at home, it's essential to source high-quality, free-range chicken and to invest in a Traeger grill for that authentic wood-fired taste. Experimenting with different types of honey and wood chips can also elevate the flavor profile of the dish, allowing for a truly personalized culinary experience.
