Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups of warm water
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1 packet of active dry yeast
  • 3 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 1/2 cups of shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup of melted butter
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon of dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon of dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups of warm water, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and 1 packet of active dry yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  • Add 3 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 2 tablespoons of olive oil to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 6-inch rope.
  • Combine 1 1/2 cups of shredded mozzarella cheese and 1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese in a bowl.
  • Flatten each rope and place a spoonful of the cheese mixture in the center. Fold the dough over the cheese and pinch the edges to seal. Roll it into a smooth rope again.
  • Place the stuffed breadsticks on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  • In a small bowl, mix 1/4 cup of melted butter, 2 cloves of minced garlic, 1/2 teaspoon of dried oregano, 1/2 teaspoon of dried basil, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.

Cheese stuffed breadsticks have a rich history dating back to ancient Rome, where they were known as "fasciola" and were a popular street food. The modern version of this delectable dish can be traced back to Italy, where skilled chefs in regions like Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany perfected the art of creating these savory treats. The key to a perfect cheese stuffed breadstick lies in the quality of the dough, the choice of cheese, and the technique used to stuff and bake them. Today, some of the best cheese stuffed breadsticks can be found in authentic Italian pizzerias and bakeries, where they are often served as a delightful appetizer or snack. For those looking to make this dish at home, using a combination of mozzarella, parmesan, and provolone cheeses can elevate the flavor, while adding herbs like oregano and basil can provide a fragrant and delicious twist. Whether enjoyed on its own or paired with marinara or garlic butter for dipping, cheese stuffed breadsticks continue to be a beloved culinary delight for cheese and bread lovers alike.
