Mixed Cheese Quesadilla
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 4 flour tortillas
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded pepper jack cheese
- 1/4 cup diced red onion
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, mix together 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese, 1/2 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese, and 1/2 cup of shredded pepper jack cheese.
- Place 2 flour tortillas on a flat surface. Divide the cheese mixture evenly between the two tortillas, spreading it out to cover the entire surface of each tortilla.
- Sprinkle 1/4 cup of diced red onion and 1/4 cup of chopped fresh cilantro over the cheese on one of the tortillas. Place the other tortilla on top to form a quesadilla.
- In a large skillet, heat 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Carefully place the quesadilla in the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until the tortilla is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
- Repeat with the remaining 2 tortillas, cheese, red onion, and cilantro.
- Once all the quesadillas are cooked, remove them from the skillet and let them cool for a minute before slicing into wedges.
- Serve hot and enjoy!
The history of the cheese quesadilla dates back to the indigenous people of Mexico, who were the first to make tortillas by pressing corn dough. The dish gained popularity in the United States in the 20th century, where it evolved to include a mix of different cheeses. Renowned chefs like Rick Bayless and Diana Kennedy have popularized the use of a blend of Oaxaca, Chihuahua, and Monterey Jack cheeses for a rich and gooey filling. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in authentic Mexican restaurants across the United States, where skilled chefs expertly blend the cheeses to create a perfect balance of flavors. The key to a delicious cheese quesadilla lies in the quality and combination of cheeses used, as well as the technique of melting them to achieve a creamy and indulgent texture. Whether it's the classic blend of Oaxaca, Chihuahua, and Monterey Jack or a creative mix of other cheeses, the key is to ensure a harmonious fusion of flavors that elevates this beloved Mexican dish.
