Cheddar and Herb Biscuits

Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh herbs (such as parsley, chives, or thyme)
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups of flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
  • Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or fork to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Stir in 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese and 2 tablespoons of chopped fresh herbs.
  • Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in 3/4 cup of buttermilk. Use a wooden spoon to stir the mixture until a soft dough forms.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently knead the dough a few times until it comes together.
  • Pat the dough into a 1-inch thick circle. Use a floured 2 1/2-inch round cutter to cut out biscuits. Place the biscuits onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  • Gently re-roll the scraps and continue cutting out biscuits until all the dough is used.
  • Bake the biscuits in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until they are golden brown and cooked through.
  • Remove the biscuits from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!

Cheddar and herb biscuits have a rich history dating back to the southern United States, where they were a staple in traditional Southern cooking. These savory biscuits are a delightful combination of sharp cheddar cheese and fragrant herbs, creating a perfect balance of flavors. Renowned chefs like Paula Deen and Bobby Flay have popularized this dish, incorporating their own unique twists. The best versions of these biscuits can be found in Southern restaurants, where they are often served as a side dish or a delicious breakfast item. The key to making these biscuits shine is using high-quality cheddar and fresh herbs, ensuring a burst of flavor in every bite.
