Caraway Rye Bread with Honey Glaze

Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups rye flour
  • 1 1/2 cups bread flour
  • 1 tablespoon caraway seeds
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 2 tablespoons honey (for glaze)

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine the rye flour, bread flour, caraway seeds, and salt.
  • In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water and 2 tablespoons of honey. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  • Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the yeast mixture and melted butter. Stir until a dough forms.
  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place the loaf on a greased baking sheet and let it rise for an additional 30 minutes.
  • Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes, or until it is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  • While the bread is still warm, brush the top with 2 tablespoons of honey for a sweet glaze.
  • Allow the bread to cool before slicing and serving. Enjoy!

Caraway Rye Bread with a honey glaze has a rich history dating back to the European region, where it was a staple in many households. The combination of the earthy caraway seeds and the sweetness of the honey glaze creates a unique and delightful flavor profile. Renowned chefs like Wolfgang Puck and Ina Garten have popularized this bread in their restaurants, adding their own twists to the traditional recipe. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in artisanal bakeries and specialty bread shops, where the careful balance of caraway seeds and honey glaze is crucial to achieving the perfect flavor. Whether enjoyed on its own or as a complement to savory dishes, this bread is a beloved classic with a modern twist.
