Cheddar and Chive Buttermilk Biscuits
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives
- 1 cup buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups of flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of salt.
- Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese and 2 tablespoons of chopped fresh chives.
- Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in 1 cup of buttermilk. Use a wooden spoon to stir the mixture until it comes together into a sticky dough.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently pat it into a 1-inch thick round. Use a floured 2 1/2-inch round cutter to cut out biscuits. Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
- Gently re-roll the scraps and continue cutting out biscuits until all the dough is used.
- Bake the biscuits in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until they are golden brown and cooked through.
- Remove the biscuits from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy warm.
The history of buttermilk biscuits with cheddar and chive can be traced back to the southern United States, where traditional buttermilk biscuits have been a staple for generations. The addition of cheddar and chive brings a savory twist to this classic dish, elevating its flavor profile and adding a delightful pop of color. Renowned chefs in the southern region, such as Paula Deen and Bobby Flay, have popularized this variation of buttermilk biscuits, incorporating their own unique twists and techniques. Restaurants across the South, particularly in states like Georgia, Tennessee, and the Carolinas, have embraced this flavorful rendition, often serving it as a side dish or as part of a hearty breakfast or brunch spread. The key to achieving the perfect buttermilk biscuits with cheddar and chive lies in the quality of ingredients. Freshly grated sharp cheddar cheese and finely chopped chives impart a rich, savory taste, while the buttermilk contributes to a tender, flaky texture. Achieving the right balance of flavors and textures is essential to creating a memorable dish. For those seeking the best version of this delectable treat, renowned southern-style eateries and bakeries are the go-to destinations. Alternatively, home cooks can experiment with alternative methods, such as incorporating garlic powder or paprika for an added kick, or using a cast-iron skillet for a crispy exterior. Whether enjoyed alongside a comforting bowl of soup or as part of a festive brunch spread, buttermilk biscuits with cheddar and chive continue to captivate food enthusiasts with their irresistible blend of flavors and Southern charm.
