Ingredients

  • 1 package of phyllo dough
  • 1 pound of ground beef or 1 pound of feta cheese
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup of vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon of paprika
  • 1/4 cup of sparkling water

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Grease a baking dish.
  • In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent.
  • Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned. Season with salt, black pepper, and paprika. If using feta cheese, crumble it and mix with the cooked onions.
  • Remove the skillet from the heat and let the meat or cheese mixture cool slightly.
  • Unroll the phyllo dough and place a damp towel over it to keep it from drying out.
  • Lay one sheet of phyllo dough on a clean surface and brush it lightly with vegetable oil. Place another sheet on top and repeat the process until you have 6 layers.
  • Spread half of the meat or cheese mixture over the phyllo dough, leaving a border around the edges.
  • Roll the phyllo dough and meat or cheese into a log, then coil it into a spiral shape and place it in the greased baking dish.
  • Repeat the layering and rolling process with the remaining phyllo dough and meat or cheese mixture.
  • Brush the top of the burek with sparkling water to help it brown and crisp up in the oven.
  • Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the burek is golden brown and crispy.
  • Allow to cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy!

Balkan

Burek is a traditional Balkan pastry filled with meat, cheese, spinach, or potatoes, and is popular in countries like Bosnia, Serbia, and Croatia. Its origins can be traced back to the Ottoman Empire, where it was introduced to the Balkans. The dish has since become a staple in the region, with each country adding its own unique twist to the recipe. Burek is typically made by layering thin dough with the filling and then baking it to golden perfection. The result is a flaky, savory pastry that is enjoyed as a snack or a meal. Some of the best burek can be found in local bakeries and restaurants throughout the Balkans, where talented chefs have perfected the art of making this delicious dish. Whether it's the crispy layers of dough or the flavorful filling, getting the balance just right is crucial to creating the perfect burek. While the traditional method involves rolling out the dough by hand, some modern recipes use phyllo dough for a quicker alternative. Whether you're in a bustling city or a quaint village, indulging in a freshly baked burek is an experience not to be missed.
