Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 2 tbsp blackening seasoning
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 8 small flour tortillas
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- 1 cup diced tomatoes
- 1/2 cup diced red onion
- 1/2 cup chopped cilantro
- 1 avocado, diced
- 1 lime, juiced
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a small bowl, mix the blackening seasoning with a pinch of salt and pepper. Rub the seasoning mixture evenly over the chicken breasts.
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the seasoned chicken breasts and cook for 5-6 minutes on each side, or until the chicken is cooked through and blackened. Remove from heat and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing into strips.
- While the chicken is resting, warm the flour tortillas in a separate skillet over medium heat for about 30 seconds on each side.
- In a medium bowl, combine the diced avocado, tomatoes, red onion, cilantro, and lime juice. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- To assemble the tacos, place a few slices of blackened chicken onto each tortilla. Top with shredded lettuce and a generous spoonful of the avocado salsa.
- Serve the blackened chicken tacos immediately and enjoy!
Blackened Chicken Tacos have a rich history rooted in the fusion of Cajun and Mexican cuisines. This flavorful dish originated in the southern United States, where chefs sought to combine the bold, spicy flavors of blackened chicken with the fresh, vibrant elements of traditional Mexican tacos. Renowned chefs like Emeril Lagasse and Paul Prudhomme popularized blackening techniques, infusing the chicken with a smoky, charred flavor. Today, the best version of this dish can be found in New Orleans, where chefs expertly blacken the chicken to perfection and pair it with zesty salsa, creamy avocado, and tangy lime crema. The key to mastering this dish lies in achieving the perfect balance of spice and char on the chicken, complemented by the fresh, bright flavors of the taco toppings. Whether grilled or pan-seared, the blackened chicken should be tender and juicy, with a robust, smoky flavor that elevates the entire taco experience. For a unique twist, some chefs incorporate Cajun spices into the taco seasoning, adding an extra layer of complexity to the dish. When preparing Blackened Chicken Tacos at home, it's essential to use high-quality, fresh ingredients and to pay close attention to the blackening process to ensure the chicken is perfectly seasoned and cooked.
