- 1 inch ginger, grated
- 1/2 cup plain yogurt
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh mint leaves
- 4 green chilies, slit lengthwise
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons cumin seeds
- 4 green cardamom pods
- 4 whole cloves
- 2-inch cinnamon stick
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 2 teaspoons red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- Salt to taste
- 3 cups water
Instructions
- Wash the basmati rice in cold water until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for 30 minutes, then drain and set aside.
- In a large bowl, marinate the beef with yogurt, half of the minced garlic, half of the grated ginger, half of the chopped cilantro, half of the chopped mint leaves, half of the green chilies, and salt. Let it marinate for at least 1 hour.
- In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds, green cardamom pods, cloves, and cinnamon stick. Sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Add the sliced onion and sauté until golden brown. Add the remaining garlic and ginger, and sauté for another 2 minutes.
- Add the marinated beef and cook until the meat is browned on all sides.
- Stir in the turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala, ground coriander, ground cumin, nutmeg, black pepper, and salt. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they are soft and the oil starts to separate from the masala.
- Add the drained rice to the pot and gently mix with the masala. Pour in the water and bring to a boil.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the biryani simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the rice and meat are fully cooked.
- Garnish with the remaining chopped cilantro, mint leaves, and green chilies. Serve hot and enjoy the extra spicy beef biryani!
Beef Biryani is a flavorful and aromatic dish that originated in the Indian subcontinent. This traditional dish is a perfect blend of tender beef, fragrant basmati rice, and a rich mix of spices. The history of Beef Biryani dates back to the Mughal era, where it was created as a royal dish in the Mughal kitchens. The dish has evolved over time, with different regions adding their own unique twist to the recipe. Chefs like Sanjeev Kapoor and Vikas Khanna have popularized their versions of Beef Biryani, each with their own special blend of extra spices. Today, the best versions of Beef Biryani can be found in Hyderabad, India, where it is a staple dish. The key to a perfect Beef Biryani lies in the marination of the beef, the quality of the spices, and the slow cooking process, allowing the flavors to meld together. For those looking for an alternative method, the "dum" cooking technique, where the dish is slow-cooked in a sealed pot, is a popular choice to enhance the flavors. Whether it's the extra spices or the cooking technique, Beef Biryani is a dish that continues to captivate food enthusiasts with its rich history and tantalizing flavors.
