Chocolate Babka
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 4 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
- 1/4 ounce of active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup of warm milk
- 1/2 cup of unsalted butter, melted
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup of powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup of unsalted butter, softened
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and 1 tablespoon of sugar in the warm milk. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, melted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt. Mix well.
- Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture and knead until a smooth dough forms. This should take about 5-7 minutes.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- In a small bowl, mix together the chocolate chips, cocoa powder, and powdered sugar.
- Punch down the dough and roll it out into a rectangle on a floured surface.
- Spread the softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle the chocolate mixture evenly over the butter.
- Roll up the dough tightly, starting from the long side, and pinch the seam to seal.
- Carefully cut the rolled dough in half lengthwise, then twist the two pieces together, keeping the cut sides facing up.
- Place the twisted dough into a greased loaf pan, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake the babka for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the babka to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing and serving.
