Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of pre-cooked shredded beef
  • 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 cups of pre-cooked cornmeal
  • 3 cups of warm water
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil

  • In a separate bowl, combine the pre-cooked cornmeal with the warm water and salt. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  • Divide the dough into 6 equal portions and shape each portion into a ball. Flatten each ball to form a patty about 1/2 inch thick.
  • Heat the vegetable oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the arepas and cook for 5-7 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  • Once the arepas are cooked, carefully slice each one horizontally to form a pocket without cutting all the way through.
  • Stuff each arepa with the shredded beef and cheese mixture.
  • Serve the stuffed arepas warm and enjoy!

Venezuelan

Arepas, a beloved staple of Venezuelan and Colombian cuisine, have a rich history dating back to pre-Columbian times. These savory cornmeal patties are filled with succulent shredded beef and gooey cheese, creating a mouthwatering combination of flavors and textures. Renowned chefs in both countries have perfected the art of crafting the perfect arepa, with some adding their own unique twists to the traditional recipe. In Venezuela, the dish is often enjoyed with a side of avocado and aji sauce, while in Colombia, it's commonly served with hogao, a delicious tomato and onion sauce. For the ultimate arepa experience, head to the bustling streets of Caracas or Bogotá, where vendors skillfully prepare these delectable treats. The key to achieving the best arepas filled with shredded beef and cheese lies in using high-quality, tender beef and a blend of flavorful cheeses. Whether you're indulging in this dish in its country of origin or attempting to recreate it at home, the combination of perfectly seasoned beef and melty cheese is essential for an unforgettable culinary experience.
