Spicy Mayo Tonkatsu
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 4 pork loin chops, 1/2 inch thick
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- Vegetable oil for frying
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons sriracha sauce
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sugar
Instructions
- Season the pork loin chops with salt and pepper on both sides.
- Dredge each pork chop in the flour, then dip into the beaten eggs, and finally coat with panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere.
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the pork chops for 5-6 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, sriracha sauce, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and sugar to make the spicy mayo drizzle.
- Slice the tonkatsu into strips and drizzle with the spicy mayo.
- Serve the tonkatsu with steamed rice and shredded cabbage for a traditional Japanese meal.
Tonkatsu, a beloved Japanese dish, has a rich history dating back to the late 19th century. It is said to have been introduced by a Japanese chef who was inspired by Western cuisine. The dish consists of a breaded and deep-fried pork cutlet, typically served with a tangy tonkatsu sauce. Over time, chefs have experimented with different variations, including the addition of a spicy mayo drizzle to give it an extra kick. Today, tonkatsu can be found in restaurants across Japan, with specialty shops in Tokyo and Osaka known for serving the best versions of this dish. The key to a perfect tonkatsu lies in the quality of the pork, the crispy breading, and the flavorful tonkatsu sauce. For a unique twist, some chefs also offer alternative methods such as using chicken or even tofu as a substitute for pork. Whether you're in Japan or trying it at home, tonkatsu with a spicy mayo drizzle is a must-try for food enthusiasts looking to experience the fusion of Japanese and Western flavors.
