Texas Brisket Sandwich

Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 3 lbs beef brisket
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp paprika
  • 2 tbsp garlic powder
  • 2 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tbsp ground cumin
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1 tbsp black pepper
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce
  • 4 sandwich buns

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, cumin, salt, and black pepper to create a dry rub.
  • Rub the dry rub all over the beef brisket, covering it completely. Let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes to allow the flavors to penetrate the meat.
  • Preheat the smoker or grill to 250°F. Add wood chips for smoke flavor if desired.
  • Place the brisket on the smoker or grill and cook for 6 hours, or until the internal temperature reaches 195°F. Add beef broth to the smoker or grill to keep the meat moist.
  • Once the brisket is cooked, remove it from the smoker or grill and let it rest for 30 minutes. Then, slice it thinly against the grain.
  • Warm the barbecue sauce in a small saucepan over low heat.
  • Assemble the sandwiches by placing a generous amount of sliced brisket on each bun and drizzling with warm barbecue sauce.
  • Serve the Texas Brisket Sandwiches hot and enjoy!

The Texas Brisket Sandwich has a rich history rooted in the Lone Star State's barbecue tradition. This iconic dish features slow-smoked brisket, a staple of Texas cuisine, served on a soft, buttery bun. Renowned pitmasters like Aaron Franklin of Franklin Barbecue in Austin have elevated the art of brisket smoking, influencing the sandwich's preparation across the state. The best versions of this dish can be found in legendary Texas barbecue joints such as Louie Mueller Barbecue in Taylor and Pecan Lodge in Dallas. The key to a perfect Texas Brisket Sandwich lies in the quality of the brisket, the smoky flavor, and the balance of savory and tangy barbecue sauce. Whether it's enjoyed with classic sides like coleslaw and pickles or served with a spicy jalapeno kick, this sandwich is a true Texas culinary treasure.
