Teriyaki Marinated Tofu

Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 1 block (14 oz) of firm tofu, drained and pressed
  • 1/4 cup of soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of sesame oil
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon of grated ginger
  • 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons of water
  • Sesame seeds and green onions for garnish

Instructions

  • Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes and place them in a shallow dish.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together 1/4 cup of soy sauce, 2 tablespoons of rice vinegar, 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, 1 tablespoon of sesame oil, 2 cloves of minced garlic, and 1 teaspoon of grated ginger to make the teriyaki marinade.
  • Pour the marinade over the tofu, making sure all the pieces are coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, turning the tofu halfway through to ensure even marination.
  • After marinating, remove the tofu from the dish and set aside. Transfer the marinade to a small saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  • In a small bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water to create a slurry. Slowly pour the slurry into the simmering marinade, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens.
  • Heat a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat and add the marinated tofu cubes. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  • Pour the thickened teriyaki sauce over the tofu in the skillet and toss to coat the tofu evenly. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing the sauce to caramelize and glaze the tofu.
  • Remove from heat and garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions. Serve the teriyaki marinated tofu hot with steamed rice or vegetables. Enjoy!

Japanese

Teriyaki marinated tofu has a rich history rooted in Japanese cuisine. The dish originated in the Kanto region of Japan, where it was traditionally prepared by marinating tofu in a blend of soy sauce, mirin, and sugar. This flavorful marinade infuses the tofu with a sweet and savory taste that has made it a popular choice for vegetarians and tofu enthusiasts worldwide. Chefs like Nobu Matsuhisa have popularized this dish in their restaurants, showcasing the versatility of tofu in Japanese cuisine. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in authentic Japanese restaurants that prioritize high-quality tofu and a well-balanced teriyaki marinade. The key to a perfect teriyaki marinated tofu lies in achieving the right balance of sweetness and umami in the marinade, as well as ensuring that the tofu is properly pressed and marinated to absorb the flavors. For a unique twist, some chefs also incorporate ingredients like ginger, garlic, or sesame oil to add depth to the marinade. Whether grilled, pan-fried, or baked, teriyaki marinated tofu continues to be a beloved dish that showcases the art of Japanese flavor profiles and tofu preparation.
