Ingredients
- 1 pound of large shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons of rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon of sesame oil
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon of fresh ginger, grated
- 1-2 red chili peppers, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- 1/4 cup of green onions, chopped
- 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a small bowl, whisk together 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, 2 tablespoons of rice vinegar, 1 tablespoon of sesame oil, 2 cloves of minced garlic, 1 tablespoon of grated ginger, 1-2 finely chopped red chili peppers, and 1 tablespoon of honey to make the spicy chili marinade.
- Place the peeled and deveined shrimp in a large bowl and pour the spicy chili marinade over the shrimp. Toss to coat the shrimp evenly. Let the shrimp marinate for 10 minutes.
- Prepare a steamer by bringing water to a boil in the bottom pot. Place the shrimp in a heatproof dish and sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste. Place the dish in the steamer and cover with a lid. Steam the shrimp for 3-4 minutes, or until they turn pink and opaque.

- Serve the spicy chili steamed shrimp hot as an appetizer or as part of a seafood meal. Enjoy!
The history of steamed shrimp with a spicy chili marinade can be traced back to the coastal regions of Southeast Asia, where the combination of fresh seafood and fiery spices has been a culinary tradition for centuries. This dish has evolved over time, with each region adding its own unique twist to the recipe. In Thailand, renowned chefs like David Thompson have perfected the art of infusing the shrimp with a marinade made from bird's eye chilies, garlic, and lime juice, creating a tantalizing balance of heat and citrusy flavors. In Vietnam, street food vendors are known for their take on this dish, using a blend of lemongrass, fish sauce, and red chilies to elevate the steamed shrimp to new heights. Today, the best version of this dish can be found in authentic Thai and Vietnamese restaurants, where the key lies in using the freshest shrimp and the perfect balance of spicy marinade to create a mouthwatering experience. Whether it's the succulent shrimp or the fiery chili marinade, every element plays a crucial role in achieving the perfect harmony of flavors in this beloved dish.
