Ingredients

  • 1 pound whole wheat pizza dough
  • 2 cups fresh spinach, chopped
  • 1 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped red onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup marinara sauce for dipping

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  • In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped spinach, minced garlic, and chopped red onion. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the spinach is wilted. Remove from heat and let it cool.
  • On a lightly floured surface, divide the whole wheat pizza dough into 4 equal portions. Roll each portion into a 6-inch circle.
  • Divide the cooked spinach mixture evenly among the 4 dough circles, leaving a border around the edges. Sprinkle crumbled feta cheese and shredded mozzarella cheese over the spinach mixture. Season with dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and black pepper.
  • Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges firmly to seal the calzones. Use a fork to crimp the edges.
  • Transfer the calzones to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cut a few slits on top of each calzone to allow steam to escape during baking.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the calzones are golden brown and crispy.
  • Remove from the oven and let the calzones cool for a few minutes before serving. Serve with marinara sauce for dipping.
  • Enjoy your delicious whole wheat spinach and feta calzone!

The Spinach and Feta Calzone with whole wheat dough has a rich history dating back to ancient Greece, where the combination of spinach and feta cheese was a staple in Mediterranean cuisine. This classic dish has evolved over the centuries, with various regions adding their own unique twists. In modern times, the calzone has become a beloved Italian comfort food, with chefs in Naples and Sicily perfecting the art of creating the perfect calzone. The use of whole wheat dough adds a nutty flavor and a healthier twist to this traditional dish, making it a popular choice for those seeking a wholesome alternative. The best versions of this dish can be found in authentic Italian trattorias and pizzerias, where skilled chefs handcraft the calzone with care and expertise. To make the perfect Spinach and Feta Calzone with whole wheat dough, it's essential to use fresh, high-quality spinach and creamy feta cheese.
