Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 1 block of firm tofu, drained and pressed
- 1/4 cup gochujang (Korean red chili paste)
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon grated ginger
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced
- 1 yellow bell pepper, sliced
- 1 small onion, sliced
- 2 cups broccoli florets
- Cooked rice, for serving
- Sesame seeds, for garnish
- Sliced green onions, for garnish
Instructions
- In a small bowl, whisk together 1/4 cup gochujang, 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 2 tablespoons rice vinegar, 2 tablespoons honey, 2 cloves minced garlic, 1 tablespoon grated ginger, and 1 tablespoon sesame oil to make the marinade.
- Cut the pressed tofu into cubes and place them in a shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the tofu, making sure it is well coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours.
- In a large skillet or wok, heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the marinated tofu and cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the tofu is browned and crispy on the outside. Remove the tofu from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the sliced red and yellow bell peppers, onion, and broccoli. Stir-fry for 5-7 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender-crisp.
- Return the tofu to the skillet and toss everything together to combine. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to heat the tofu through.
- Serve the spicy gochujang marinated tofu stir-fry over cooked rice, and garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions. Enjoy!
The Spicy Gochujang Marinated Tofu Stir-fry has its roots in Korean cuisine, where gochujang, a fermented chili paste, is a staple ingredient. This dish combines the bold flavors of gochujang with the delicate texture of tofu, creating a harmonious balance of heat and umami. The dish gained popularity in the West as a flavorful and healthy vegetarian option. Chefs like David Chang and Roy Choi have popularized this dish in their restaurants, bringing it to the forefront of modern Asian fusion cuisine. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in Korean restaurants or those specializing in plant-based cuisine. The key to a successful Spicy Gochujang Marinated Tofu Stir-fry lies in the quality of the gochujang and the proper marination of the tofu to ensure maximum flavor infusion. For a twist, some chefs also incorporate vegetables like bell peppers, onions, and mushrooms to add depth to the stir-fry.
