Soft Pretzel Sticks

Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Coarse sea salt, for sprinkling

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups of warm water, 1 packet of active dry yeast, and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy.
  • Add 4 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 teaspoon of salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  • Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, about 10 inches in length, and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  • In a shallow dish, mix 1/4 cup of baking soda with 4 cups of warm water. Dip each pretzel stick into the baking soda water, then place them back on the baking sheet. Brush the tops of the pretzels with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
  • Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the pretzel sticks are golden brown.
  • Allow the pretzel sticks to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy with your favorite dipping sauces!

Soft pretzel sticks have a rich history dating back to the 7th century in Southern Germany, where monks are believed to have created the first pretzels as rewards for children who learned their prayers. These twisted treats gained popularity and spread throughout Europe, eventually making their way to America with German immigrants. Today, soft pretzel sticks are a beloved snack found in restaurants, food trucks, and sports venues across the country. The key to a perfect soft pretzel stick lies in the dough, which should be made with high-quality flour, yeast, and a touch of sweetness. The sticks are then boiled in a baking soda solution before being baked to achieve their signature chewy texture and golden crust. For a delicious twist, some chefs sprinkle the pretzel sticks with coarse salt or serve them with a side of tangy mustard or warm cheese dip. In Philadelphia, the home of the famous Philly soft pretzel, locals take their pretzel sticks seriously, and many claim that the best versions can be found at traditional bakeries and markets in the city. Whether enjoyed plain or with a flavorful dip, soft pretzel sticks continue to be a timeless snack that satisfies cravings for something salty and satisfying.
