  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp grated fresh ginger
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup sesame seeds
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, whisk together 1/4 cup soy sauce, 2 tbsp sesame oil, 2 tbsp rice vinegar, 1 tbsp honey, and 1 tsp grated fresh ginger to make the dressing. Set aside.

  • While the tuna is resting, divide 8 cups of mixed salad greens among 4 plates.
  • Slice the seared tuna into thin slices and arrange on top of the salad greens.
  • Drizzle the dressing over the tuna and greens, and sprinkle with sliced green onions and sesame seeds.

Seared Ahi Tuna Salad has a rich history rooted in the culinary traditions of Hawaii. This dish gained popularity in the 1970s when chefs in Hawaii began experimenting with fresh, locally caught Ahi tuna. The dish quickly spread to mainland United States, becoming a staple in upscale restaurants and seafood eateries. Renowned chefs like Roy Yamaguchi and Alan Wong have played a significant role in popularizing Seared Ahi Tuna Salad, incorporating their own unique twists and flavor profiles. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in restaurants along the Hawaiian coast, where the freshest Ahi tuna is readily available. The key to a perfect Seared Ahi Tuna Salad lies in the quality of the tuna and the skillful searing technique, ensuring a tender, melt-in-your-mouth texture with a flavorful crust. For a unique twist, some chefs also incorporate Asian-inspired dressings and toppings, adding a burst of umami and complexity to the dish. Whether enjoyed in a high-end restaurant or prepared at home, Seared Ahi Tuna Salad continues to be a beloved dish that celebrates the natural flavors of the ocean.
