Salmon cakes, also known as salmon patties, have a rich history dating back to early American and European cuisine. This beloved dish gained popularity as a way to make use of leftover salmon, often mixed with breadcrumbs, herbs, and spices. Chefs and home cooks alike have put their own spin on this classic, with variations in ingredients and cooking methods. In the southern United States, salmon cakes are often pan-fried to a golden crisp, while in the Pacific Northwest, they may be grilled for a smoky flavor. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in coastal regions known for their fresh seafood. The key to a perfect salmon cake lies in using high-quality salmon and balancing the flavors of the accompanying ingredients. Whether served as an appetizer, main course, or sandwich filling, salmon cakes continue to be a beloved dish with a timeless appeal.
