Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/3 cup bread crumbs
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 8 ounces sliced mushrooms
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine 1 pound of ground beef, 1/3 cup of bread crumbs, 1/4 cup of finely chopped onion, 1 egg, 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper. Mix until well combined, then shape into 4 oval patties.
- Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add 8 ounces of sliced mushrooms and cook for 5-6 minutes, or until they are golden brown and the liquid has evaporated.
- Sprinkle 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour over the mushrooms and stir to coat. Cook for 1 minute, then gradually stir in 2 cups of beef broth. Bring to a simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the gravy has thickened.
- Stir in 1/2 cup of heavy cream and return the patties to the skillet. Simmer for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and the gravy has thickened.
- Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of chopped fresh parsley before serving. Enjoy your Salisbury steak with mushroom gravy!
Salisbury steak with mushroom gravy is a classic comfort food that has been enjoyed for generations. This dish originated in the United States in the late 19th century and was named after Dr. J.H. Salisbury, an early advocate of a meat-centered diet. The steak is typically made from ground beef, shaped into patties, and seasoned with onions and breadcrumbs. The mushroom gravy adds a rich and savory flavor, making it a popular choice for family dinners and diner menus. Chefs across the country have put their own spin on this dish, with variations in seasoning and cooking methods. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in traditional American diners and family-owned restaurants, where it's often served with mashed potatoes or buttered noodles. The key to getting this dish right lies in the quality of the ground beef and the richness of the mushroom gravy. For a twist, some chefs also incorporate Worcestershire sauce or Dijon mustard into the gravy for an extra depth of flavor. Whether enjoyed at a cozy diner or homemade with love, Salisbury steak with mushroom gravy continues to be a beloved classic in American cuisine.
