  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 2 tbsp caraway seeds
  • 2 tbsp molasses
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water and let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  • Add the molasses, salt, and vegetable oil to the yeast mixture and stir to combine.
  • Gradually add the rye flour, all-purpose flour, and caraway seeds to the bowl, stirring until a dough forms.
  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  • Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place the loaf on a greased baking sheet, cover with the kitchen towel, and let it rise for an additional 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes, or until it is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  • Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving. Enjoy!

European

Rye bread has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages, originating in the Nordic and Baltic regions. The addition of caraway seeds adds a unique flavor and aroma to this beloved bread. Chefs and bakers in Germany, Scandinavia, and Eastern Europe have perfected the art of crafting rye bread with caraway seeds, infusing it with a delightful earthy and slightly sweet taste. Today, the best versions of this bread can be found in traditional European bakeries, where skilled artisans use time-honored techniques to achieve the perfect balance of rye flour, caraway seeds, and other essential ingredients. Whether enjoyed with butter or used for sandwiches, this bread is a staple in many households.
