Roast Turkey with Cranberry Sauce

Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 1 whole turkey (12-14 pounds)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons dried thyme
  • 2 tablespoons dried rosemary
  • 2 tablespoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon black pepper
  • 2 cups fresh cranberries
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C).
  • Rinse the turkey and pat dry with paper towels. Place the turkey on a rack in a roasting pan.
  • In a small bowl, mix together the melted butter, garlic powder, thyme, rosemary, salt, and black pepper. Rub the mixture all over the turkey, including under the skin and inside the cavity.
  • Roast the turkey in the preheated oven, basting every 30 minutes with the pan juices, until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C), about 3 hours for a 12-14 pound turkey.
  • While the turkey is roasting, prepare the cranberry sauce. In a saucepan, combine the cranberries, orange juice, sugar, and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the cranberries burst and the sauce thickens. Remove from heat and let cool.
  • Once the turkey is done, remove it from the oven and let it rest for 20-30 minutes before carving.
  • Serve the roast turkey with the homemade cranberry sauce on the side. Enjoy!

Roast Turkey with Cranberry Sauce is a classic dish that has become synonymous with Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations in the United States. The tradition of serving roast turkey during holiday feasts dates back to the early days of the American colonies, where wild turkeys were plentiful and became a popular choice for special occasions. The dish gained widespread popularity in the 19th century when it was featured in cookbooks and magazines, and it has since become a staple on holiday tables across the country. The succulent, juicy turkey, roasted to perfection, is often accompanied by tangy, sweet cranberry sauce, creating a perfect balance of flavors. Chefs and home cooks alike have put their own spin on the classic recipe, incorporating various herbs, spices, and cooking techniques to enhance the flavor of the turkey and the cranberry sauce. In recent years, there has been a growing trend towards brining the turkey before roasting, which helps to lock in moisture and infuse the meat with extra flavor. While the dish is widely enjoyed throughout the United States, some regions are particularly renowned for their exceptional roast turkey with cranberry sauce. For example, in New England, where cranberries are abundant, chefs take pride in creating homemade cranberry sauce using locally grown berries, adding a fresh and authentic touch to the dish. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in reputable restaurants and eateries that prioritize using high-quality, fresh ingredients and expert culinary techniques. When preparing roast turkey with cranberry sauce at home, attention to detail is key, from selecting a plump, well-raised turkey to crafting a perfectly balanced cranberry sauce with just the right amount of sweetness and tartness. For those looking to put a unique twist on the traditional recipe, alternative methods such as smoking or deep-frying the turkey have gained popularity, offering a delicious and unconventional take on this beloved holiday dish. Whether enjoyed in a cozy home setting or at a top-notch restaurant, roast turkey with cranberry sauce continues to hold a special place in the hearts and palates of people across the United States.
