Pulled Jackfruit Sandwich on Pretzel Bun

Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 2 cans of young green jackfruit in brine, drained and rinsed
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 cup of vegetable broth
  • 1/4 cup of barbecue sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon of chili powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 pretzel buns
  • 1/4 cup of coleslaw (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  • In a large skillet, sauté the diced onion and minced garlic over medium heat until softened, about 5 minutes.
  • Add the drained and rinsed jackfruit to the skillet and use a fork to break it apart into smaller pieces, resembling pulled pork.
  • Pour in the vegetable broth, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, smoked paprika, cumin, and chili powder. Stir to combine all the ingredients.
  • Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let the jackfruit simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it has absorbed the flavors and has a pulled pork-like texture.
  • While the jackfruit is simmering, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Place the pretzel buns on a baking sheet and warm them in the oven for 5-7 minutes, until they are slightly toasted.
  • Once the jackfruit is ready, season with salt and pepper to taste and mix well.
  • To assemble the sandwiches, divide the pulled jackfruit mixture evenly among the pretzel buns. Top with coleslaw if desired.
  • Serve the pulled jackfruit sandwiches on pretzel buns immediately and enjoy!

The Pulled Jackfruit Sandwich on a pretzel bun has become a popular vegan alternative to pulled pork. Originating in Southeast Asia, jackfruit has been used for centuries in savory dishes. The trend of using it as a meat substitute gained traction in the West in recent years. Chefs like Chloe Coscarelli and Isa Chandra Moskowitz have popularized this dish in their vegan restaurants, drawing inspiration from traditional barbecue flavors. Today, the best versions of this sandwich can be found in vegan eateries and food trucks across the United States. The key to nailing this dish lies in perfectly seasoned and shredded jackfruit, paired with a soft, salty pretzel bun.
