Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • 8 hot dogs
  • 1 large egg yolk beaten with 1 tablespoon water
  • Pretzel salt or coarse sea salt

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups warm water, 1 tablespoon sugar, and 2 teaspoons salt. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for 5 minutes, or until it becomes foamy.
  • Add the flour and mix until the dough comes together. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  • Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  • In a large bowl, mix together 2 cups warm water and 2 tablespoons baking soda. Set aside.
  • Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, then wrap it around a hot dog, pinching the ends to seal. Dip each pretzel dog into the baking soda solution, then place it on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Brush each pretzel dog with the egg wash and sprinkle with pretzel salt or coarse sea salt.
  • Bake for 12-14 minutes, or until the pretzels are golden brown.
  • Allow to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your delicious homemade pretzel dogs!

The Pretzel Dog is a beloved American snack that combines the savory goodness of a hot dog with the salty, chewy perfection of a pretzel. This iconic treat has its roots in German cuisine, where pretzels have been a staple for centuries. The marriage of the pretzel and the hot dog is said to have originated in the United States, where it quickly gained popularity at state fairs, sporting events, and food stands. Today, the Pretzel Dog can be found at countless eateries across the country, from food trucks to gourmet hot dog joints. The key to a perfect Pretzel Dog lies in the quality of the pretzel dough and the juiciness of the hot dog. Some chefs even add a sprinkle of coarse salt for an extra burst of flavor. For those looking to try a unique twist on this classic, some establishments offer a pretzel dog with a variety of gourmet toppings, such as jalapenos, cheese, or even bacon.
