Pizza Margherita is a classic Italian dish, named after Queen Margherita of Savoy. Legend has it that in 1889, renowned Neapolitan pizzaiolo Raffaele Esposito created this pizza to honor the queen, using tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil to represent the colors of the Italian flag. This simple yet flavorful pizza quickly gained popularity and became a symbol of Italian cuisine. Today, the best Pizza Margherita can be found in Naples, where the use of San Marzano tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and basil from the Campania region is crucial. The key to a perfect Pizza Margherita lies in the quality of its ingredients and the traditional wood-fired oven cooking method.
