Homemade Pita Bread
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon white sugar
- 1 1/4 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve 2 1/4 teaspoons of active dry yeast and 1 teaspoon of white sugar in 1 1/4 cups of warm water. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 teaspoon of salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Mix until a dough starts to form.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
- Preheat your oven to 500 degrees F (260 degrees C) and place a pizza stone or baking sheet inside to heat up.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and then flatten it into a 1/4 inch thick circle.
- Carefully place the dough circles onto the hot pizza stone or baking sheet and bake for 3-4 minutes, or until they puff up and turn golden brown.
- Remove the pita bread from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your homemade pita bread!
Pita bread, a staple of Middle Eastern cuisine, has a history dating back thousands of years. Its origins can be traced to ancient Mesopotamia, where it was first baked in mud ovens. This versatile bread gained popularity across the Mediterranean and Middle East, becoming a beloved accompaniment to dishes like falafel and shawarma. Today, skilled bakers and chefs in regions like Lebanon, Israel, and Greece are celebrated for their mastery of pita bread. The key to perfect pita lies in achieving the right balance of softness and slight chewiness, and the traditional method of baking in a hot, dome-shaped oven is crucial for achieving the signature pocket that makes pita bread so unique. For the best pita bread experience, seek out authentic Middle Eastern eateries or try making it at home using a hot cast-iron skillet for a delicious alternative.
