Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups mashed potatoes
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup diced onion
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons butter for frying

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, mix together 2 cups of flour and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk 1 large egg, then add 1/2 cup of sour cream and 1/4 cup of softened butter. Mix until well combined.
  • Gradually add the wet ingredients to the flour mixture, stirring until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth, then cover and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  • In a separate bowl, combine 2 cups of mashed potatoes, 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese, 1/2 cup of diced onion, and salt and pepper to taste.
  • Roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut into circles using a cookie cutter or a glass. Place a spoonful of the potato filling in the center of each circle, then fold the dough over and press the edges to seal.
  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the pierogi in batches for 3-5 minutes, or until they float to the surface. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain.
  • In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the boiled pierogi and fry until golden brown on both sides.
  • Serve hot with sour cream or your favorite dipping sauce. Enjoy!

Pierogi, a beloved Polish dish, are dumplings filled with various ingredients such as potatoes, cheese, sauerkraut, meat, or fruit. Originating in Eastern Europe, pierogi have become a staple in Polish cuisine and are enjoyed worldwide. The dough is typically made with flour, water, and sometimes eggs, creating a soft and tender texture. These dumplings are often boiled, then pan-fried for a crispy finish. Chefs and home cooks alike take pride in perfecting the art of making pierogi, with some adding modern twists to the traditional recipe. In Poland, the city of Krakow is renowned for its delicious pierogi, with restaurants like Pierozki U Vincenta serving up authentic and flavorful variations. Whether enjoyed as a savory main dish or a sweet dessert, pierogi continue to be a cherished comfort food.
