Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 1 pound pizza dough
- 1/2 cup marinara sauce
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup sliced pepperoni
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pizza dough into a 12x8 inch rectangle.
- Spread the marinara sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges.
- Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese over the marinara sauce, then layer the pepperoni slices on top.
- Starting from one of the long sides, tightly roll up the dough into a log, pinching the seams to seal.
- Place the stromboli seam-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Brush the top of the stromboli with olive oil and sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese and Italian seasoning.
- Using a sharp knife, make 3-4 diagonal slits on top of the stromboli to allow steam to escape during baking.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the stromboli is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing.
- Serve warm and enjoy!
The history of Pepperoni and Cheese Stromboli dates back to the 1950s in the United States, where it was created as a variation of the traditional Italian stromboli. This delicious dish is a popular choice for Italian-American cuisine lovers, featuring a rolled pizza dough filled with pepperoni, cheese, and sometimes other ingredients like bell peppers and onions. The name "Stromboli" is inspired by the Italian film of the same name, and the dish is believed to have originated in the Philadelphia area. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in Italian-American restaurants across the country, where skilled chefs craft the perfect balance of flavors and textures. The key to a great Pepperoni and Cheese Stromboli lies in using high-quality ingredients, especially the pepperoni and cheese, to ensure a rich and savory taste. While the traditional recipe is widely loved, some chefs and home cooks also experiment with alternative methods, such as adding different types of cheese or incorporating homemade pizza dough for a unique twist. Whether enjoyed as a quick bite or a hearty meal, Pepperoni and Cheese Stromboli continues to be a beloved classic in the world of Italian-American cuisine.
